Oh, Sunday!

I make a living as a digital marketer. All week long I fuss over technology, processes, industry analyses, trends, ... data ...

Basically I try to wrap my head around the mechanics of how people think and act as they go about buying what they buy.

But, you see, that's just the business of living.

Life itself is something more. Life happens when you put on those new hiking shoes you just bought and walk a short Sunday morning trail with the dog just to get comfy in the new shoes.

Hopefully that's the part you enjoy and cherish more than just the experience of buying those shoes. If they are really good shoes - you will love owning the pair and wearing them out - have them as your favorite pair - to live life in. You may even fall in love with the brand. But only because it makes your life a little more charmed.

Charm is the operative word. The beauty of living. Gratitude for being alive and being able to feel life in every breath. A Sunday morning hike through the woods. Time spent with your dog.

Call me old fashioned. I do not see how an expensive car or smartphone makes your life more charmed. Hiking shoes - sure! Great music and books - sure! Maria Popova's Sunday newsletter - sure!

I'll let you in on a little secret. I am a marketer - and I love it when people pay me to do that. But ask me if I am a huge fan of consumerism and I will tell you I am not. Don't own stuff just because you  must - that's just clever marketing getting inside your head - it's what people call #FOMO - the Fear of Missing Out.

Week after week I ask my clients - "what really sets your brand apart?". They rattle off functional and style differences, technology, quality standards - and everyone wants their marketing done right - marketing done "savvy" - marketing done "sexy"

But that's not why you buy a Cruiser, is it?

Why do you buy a Cruiser?

Because you want to feel life pulsating through your veins.

Because you want to be that guy for a while.

That guy with an interesting story to tell.

Because stories are what make life charming.

Why? Because it's human nature. And I am glad that human nature is above and beyond human behavior - that mad rush to line up outside Apple stores or Nike stores. Human nature is what makes you get away from the business of living and back to living itself.

And for that reason I am glad that today is a relaxed, laid back, beautiful Sunday!
